Ordinarily, I am not a fan of period performances that push the limits of the speedometer in terms of tempo, but here the phrasing and dexterity of the flute and recorder are the exception. I find that their speed and clear delineation of the ornaments and articulation make for an energetic and perhaps even exciting performance. Only Maurice Steger’s playing seems in the same league, and here everything in terms of tuning and dynamics simply shimmers. In short, this is one outstanding disc and one that will both demonstrate the perfection achieved by Il Rossignolo and Telemann’s lively and progressive music that they perform.
